NACOSTI and TCC Africa Hosts Falling Walls Lab Nairobi

Falling Walls in partnership with NACOSTI and  TCC Africa are hosting Falling Walls  Lab, Nairobi, which, will be done via Facebook Live on 25 September at 10:00AM EAT.

Falling Walls Lab is an international forum for the next generation of early career innovators, trailblazers, creators and visionaries. Its aim is to promote exceptional ideas and connect promising scientists and entrepreneurs from all fields on a global level. Participants, also known as Labsters, are given the opportunity to present their research, business model, or initiative of peers, a high –calibre jury from academia and business, and the general public –in just 3 minutes

Nominations are accepted in any of the ten categories:

  2. Physical Sciences,
  3. Engineering and Technology,
  4. Social Sciences and the Humanities,
  5. Science in the Arts,
  6. Digital Education,
  7. Science and Innovation Management
  8. Emerging Talents 
  9. Science Start-ups

ABOUT THE FALLING WALLS LAB

The goal of the Falling Walls Lab is to advance scientific and entrepreneurial visions, and to initiate and promote exchange between outstanding talents and innovative thinkers across disciplines. Over the last years, 90 top-ranked institutions such as the ETH Zurich, Stanford University, and Seoul National University have hosted international Falling Walls Labs. The Falling Walls Foundation is organised by the Falling Walls Foundation and generously funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research, the Berlin-Senate, the Bayer Foundations, Huawei, and Sartorius. It is supported by the Federal Foreign Office of Germany and the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD).

ABOUT THE FALLING WALLS FOUNDATION

The Falling Walls Foundation is a non-profit organisation that fosters discussion on research and innovation, and promotes the latest scientific findings among a broad audience from all parts of society. It organises the Falling Walls Conference, a unique international gathering of leaders from science, business, politics and the arts. Each year on 9 November, 20 of the world’s leading scientists present their current breakthrough research in 15 minutes each. The Falling Walls Foundation is supported by the German Ministry for Education and Research, the Helmholtz Association, the Robert Bosch Foundation, and numerous other acclaimed academic institutions, foundations, and companies, non-governmental organisations and prominent individuals.

TRAINING CENTRE IN COMMUNICATION

The Training Centre in Communication (TCC Africa), is the first African-based training centre to teach effective communication skills to scientists. TCC Africa is an award winning Trust, established as a non-profit entity in 2006 and is registered in Kenya.  TCC Africa provides capacity support in improving researchers output and visibility through training in scholarlyand science communication.

HISTORY

TCC Africa held its first course in October 2006 at Makerere University, Kampala, Uganda and in late 2007, signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the University of Nairobi, School of Biological Sciences, and has its headquarters on the Chiromo Campus, Nairobi, Kenya.

MISSION

TCC Africa’s mission is to contribute to the increase in profile, locally, and internationally, of African science, and its impact on the life of Africans, by improving skills in technical communication in all forms, at academia and other relevant forums, in Africa.

OBJECTIVE

To Train. Support. Empower. researchers through capacity in improving their research output and visibility.

NATIONAL COMMISSION FOR SCIENCE TECHNOLOGY AND INNOVATIO (NACOSTI)

The National Commission for Science, Technology and Innovation (NACOSTI) is established by the Science, Technology and Innovation Act, No. 28 of 2013 (ST&I Act) as a State Corporation. NACOSTI regulates and assures quality in Science, Technology and Innovation (ST&I) Sector and advises the Government in matters related thereto.

As part of promotion of research, Section 6(1) of the ST&I Act 2013 provides for promoting the adoption and application of scientific and technological knowledge and information necessary in attaining national development goals; Co-ordinate, monitor and evaluate, as appropriate, activities relating to scientific research and technology development; and Promote and encourage private sector involvement in scientific research and innovation and development.

In this respect, NACOSTI, in collaboration with the Falling Walls Foundation and the Training Centre for Communications (TCC Africa), is hosting Falling Walls Labs to showcase the quality, diversity, and passion of their region’s most innovative minds.
